The paper aims to highlight critical aspects of the organization and management of research at the University of the West Indies (UWI), with a view to stimulating discussion and further inquiry, and leading to the formulation of policy, recommendations and plan of activity for the promotion of research. It briefly explores the historical and societal context of research at UWI, and raises questions pertaining to the role of university research in the region.
