dc.description.abstract | A questionnaire was administered to 1,403 Grade 12 students in the Bahamas, who were described as potentially eligible to pursue college-level work leading to teacher certification. Student opinions were sought on teacher training programmes at the College of the Bahamas, conditions of teaching employment, characteristics of students in secondary schools, and contrasts between teaching and other occupations. The majority of the respondents indicated that parents were most influential in their career plans, and continued education was deemed important by almost all of those responding. At least some interest in becoming a teacher was expressed by 32 percent of the students. In rating selected aspects of the college teacher education programme, the most common student response was "don't know." Of the 10 conditions of teacher employment assessed, salary, equipment, and facilities were rated the lowest. Aspects of teacher employment were rated lower than those of other professions, particularly in the areas of prestige and rewards. Suggestions are made for efforts to improve the image of teaching among parents of students who have potential to become teachers and the students themselves | |
