Prof. Sharma, an A'level TEXTEL scholar, obtained his BSc in Electrical Engineering with the Telecommunications option in 1979 from UWI. After graduation he joined the Trinidad and Tobago Oil Company, Pt. Fortin. He was then awarded a UWI Scholarship to read for a MSc in Power Systems. On completion of his thesis, he was employed at Centrin as the E&I Supervisor during the construction of the merchant bar steel mill. After the commissioning of the Centrin plant, he joined the NEC as the E&I Engineer and was quickly promoted to the E&I Superintendent during the construction and commissioning of Trinidad's first Methanol Plant.
In September 1986 he was recruited by UWI, Faculty of Engineering to fill a vacancy in the Department of Electrical Engineering UWI. It was whilst he was a full time member of staff in the Department, he read for his PhD in Electrical Engineering.
Prof. Sharma has served on several Boards of Directors in Trinidad including: ISCOTT, Powergen, and T&TEC. He was the Chairman of National Infrastructure Development Company Ltd (Nidco) which had the responsibility for the Rapid Rail, Water Taxis and the improvements on the National Highways. He also served as the Chairman of Doc's Engineering Works Ltd.
He is currently a member of the Boards of Directors of Trinidad Concrete Products, Caribbean Hydro Source and Republic Bank. He was a Director of the Barbados National Bank's (BNB) three subsidiaries viz: BNB Mortgage and Finance, BNB Finance and Trust, and BNB Funds.
Prof. Sharma has served in public Commissions of Enquiries in Trinidad and Jamaica. He was the developer and Convenor of the CXC/CAPE’s A'level subject "Electrical and Electronic Technology". He was also a member of the Government task force on Education on the implementation of the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in schools. He served as the Power Sector Advisor to the Organization of Caribbean Utility Regulators (OOCUR).
Prof. Sharma has authored over ninety technical papers and reports. He is the Leader of the Energy Systems programme in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering UWI and the Chairman of the Academic and Technical Services Staff Committee as well as a Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, UWI. He is a reviewer for the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) Transactions on Power Delivery.
Prof. Sharma was a member of the Advisory Council on Utilities and Maintenance of the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) as well as an external curricula advisor. He was the Chairman of the Trinidad and Tobago Section of the IEEE. He is a member of the IEEE Global Committee on Accreditation Activities and the IEEE Accreditation Council. He is the founder and the first President of the Caribbean Accreditation Council for Engineering and Technology (CACET), the regional body recognized by Caricom for the Accreditation of Degree Programmes in Engineering and Technology.
Prof. Sharma is a past President of the West Indies Group University Teachers and a Past President and Fellow of Association Professional Engineers of Trinidad and Tobago.
