Noting that the Caribbean currently records the lowest enrollment universities in the Western Hemisphere, he says that the pandemic threatens to reduce the region's figures even further. The government is concerned about the 184 T&T nationals who remain on the University of the West Indies campuses abroad. As a result, financial assistance has been sent to each of them. Communications Minister DONNA COX says that the Ministry of Finance has ensured that students abroad receive financial aid. She explains that Finance Ministry wired grants to the UWI bursars valued at US$300 or TT $2,000 for food supplies for each student. The Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU) is calling on the Ministry of Finance to honor a judgement handed down to the employees of the University of the West Indies. Workers attached to UWI St Augustine were given an eight percent salary increase when the industrial court delivered a judgement last August. However, to date employees have yet to receive the adjustments to their salaries, or their retroactive pay. The University of The West Indies today hosted a Vice Chancellor's Forum titled, “Demystifying the Coronavirus”. The regional university convened a group of experts to examine issues related to the recent Coronavirus outbreak originating in China. The panel discussion offered informed analysis and perspectives and sought to clarify information on the virus’ spread, treatment and the Caribbean region’s response.
