Pan is Not in Danger at UWI

In a letter to the editor, Rawle Gibbons seeks the clarify the statement made by Pat Bishop in her address at the University graduation ceremony, which stated that “...not one single graduate of 1994 has qualified in any serious steel drum concern”. Rawle argued that there were programmes in steelpan on the University curriculum.
Pat Bishop Wows Pan Management Workshop.

A Pan Management workshop was mounted by the Laventille Steelband Festival committee as part of its three-tier Emancipation celebration. In the opening module Dr Lloyd Best discussed his School in Pan Concept. Dr Keith Nurse also shared his belief, that an export processing zone for pan is possibly one way of relieving the economic woes of steel orchestras. Pat Bishop however, was the most memorable speaker as she discussed organizational structure and human resources. Known as 'The First Lady of Pan’ for her work in bringing several steel orchestras into winners' row, Bishop is of the view that “a Steelband isn't a democratic organisation." She stated "it is very hierarchical and depends for its effectiveness upon strong, top-down leadership…”.
