Item They're Trying to Steal the Pan(Express, 1-Aug-99) Martin-Hinds, Angela; The University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago“There are forces at work today trying to wrest from Trinbagonian Africans the ownership of the steelband”. This was stated emphatically by Kenrick Thomas, the author of a new book entitled Panriga— Tacarigua's Contribution to the Evolution of the Steelband Phenomenon in Trinidad and Tobago. Thomas also disagrees with those who claim that only people from Port of Spain contributed to steelpan and has written the book to show how the pan developed.Item Christmas Comes Early for Panazz Players(Express, 1-Aug-99) Joseph, Terry; The University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus, Trinidad and TobagoPanazz Players recreated a Christmas mood, as the band put down tracks for their next album at Studio Rob in the Caribbean Sound Basin. The ten-track album of popular seasonal selections cost the band some TT$100,000. In agreeing with the idea, Arnold said Skinner Park is as good as any venue in Port of Spain. The company's move to mass-produce pans came in the wake of steelband music being introduced in the curriculum for schools throughout England. The system of producing the musical instruments have eliminated the use of oil drums and substitutes a purpose-made instrument that only needs to be tuned. If the judges do not get an apology, they would refuse to adjudicate and the semi-finals and finals will have to be called off, for the regulations state that the same judges must decide on the winning bands right through the competition. Despers placed first in Panorama North zonal preliminaries with their rendition of Blue Boy's "Rebecca". The musician and aspiring arranger is expected to do at least 20 weekend workshops. Conversation, a promotion outfit in Japan that explores ethnic cultures, is responsible for Tiki's visit and has previous experience with pan, collaborating with Renegades and Samaroo Jets Steel Orchestras.
