A.This paper focuses on classroom teaching at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. It defines the components of teaching excellence and the factors that contribute to such excellence. The need to set specific goals in order to optimize the effectiveness of the teaching effort is underscored. It argues that excellence in teaching should constitute a deliberate, explicit, and perceived to be attainable objective of educational systems, particularly those of small developing nations with limited financial resources. The paper includes the results of an indicative survey of opinions regarding excellence in teaching held by primary, secondary and tertiary teachers, and undergraduate students. The major patterns are discussed as well as their implications for possible improvements to teaching effectiveness.Item The relationship between teacher opinions and reported use of content area reading strategies among teachers on the Diploma in Education programme(1990) Osborne, Annette;This study examines the relationship between teacher opinions regarding content area reading strategies and the reported use of such strategies in the local situation, in an effort to infer the extent of use of these strategies in the classroom. Questionnaires were administered to 55 secondary school teachers who participated in the Diploma in Education programme at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, during the 1988/89 academic year. Analysis of the data indicated a modest correlation between opinions and the reported use of these strategies in Trinidad and Tobago, which is positive and moderately high
