    The United States has changed its attitude towards Haiti regarding the trade embargo and is now willing to grant licenses to individual companies on a case by case basis. The Bush administration is criticised for this change of heart. The first batch of Haitian refugees is repatriated from Guantanamo Bay and conditions in the Haitian countryside on the return of the refugees are reported on; Jamaica wants a meeting for a special discussion on the plight of Haitian refugees. Dominica's Prime Minister, Dame Eugenia Charles re-confirms her decision to attend the ACP/EC General Assembly in Santo Domingo, rather than the Caricom leaders intercessional meeting in Jamaica; she is interviewed on what she hopes to achieve in Santo-Domingo. Concern is expressed for the Windward Islands banana industry especially in light of a recently published report by CTA Economic and Exports Analysts Ltd., which was commissioned by the Caribbean Banana Exporters Association (CBEA). The report confirms that the industry will be wiped out by a massive fall in prices if Windward Island producers were to loose their protective market, and Claire Wenner lobbyist on behalf of CBEA is interviewed. The final segment reports on the monetary grant which the Brtish parliament aproves for the Caribbean Development Bank.

    Although the retirement of Prime Minister Michael Manley was not on the agenda at the executive meeting of the PNP, speculation still abounds that it will be discussed at a meeting of the party’s executive, the National Executive Council and the Parliamentary Group on Sunday. In Guyana, Opposition Leader Dr. Cheddi Jagan charges Prime Minister Desmond Hoyte with underselling key sectors of state holdings. Although Britain’s labour party is fielding nine non-white candidates for the upcoming general elections, Guyanese born Member of Parliament Bernie Grant thinks more can be done to encourage the selection of Black and Asian candidates. West Indies Team Manager Deryck Murray is heartened over his team’s victory against India. The West Indies team is now fourth in World Cup standings. State owned Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation will soon have a rival when a new channel CVM starts broadcasting later this year. Finally, participants at a two day conference on women in the media in St. Lucia express disappointment after the Minister for Women’s Affairs, Stephenson King failed to show up to address and formally open the conference.

    Haitian lawmarkers call on the President of the Senate for a date and venue to be announced within the next 72 hours for the next rounds of talks with the OAS. United States express concerns on reports circulating that people trying to leave Haiti are being persecuted. After fears are expressed by the Dominican Republic on the ability to provide adequate security for ousted Haitian President Jean Bertrand Aristide, he declines to apeak at a scheuled meetngin Haiti, while reports circulate on the real reason for not wanting him to speak. An OAS representative withdraws from attendance to a UN Caribbean and Latin group meeting on the crisis in Haiti. The OECS reviews the tariff ceiling in the Common External Tariff. General Secretary of the Barbados Workers Union says hte regions politicians are misjudging the desire for integration and Caribbean Banana Producers are seeking assurances from the European Community that their guaranteed markets under the Lome Convention will not be destroyed by the Introduction of the Single European Market.
