Item Continuing education of professional engineers in the Caribbean - Current issues and future strategies(Jul 1994) Chin, Myron W.;This paper briefly reviews some of the recent developments in the provision of continuing education of professional engineers in the Caribbean, and discusses some of the current issues facing the engineering education in the Caribbean, with particular reference to the cost-effective use of the latest telecommunications technologies and other information technology (IT)-based educational methods for continuing engineering education (CEE). The paper concludes that the recently established Engineering Institute and the Continuing Education Centre in the Faculty of Engineering, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, have a pivotal role to play in defining and implementing effective strategies for ensuring industry-university cooperation in the provision of quality CEEItem Continuing engineering education: An effective means of technology transfer(Association of Professional Engineers, 1988) Chin, Myron W.; World Association of Industrial and Technological Research OrganizationsThis paper discusses the role that Continuing Engineering Education (CEE) can play as an effective means of technology transfer, especially in developing countries, when compared to other transfer mechanisms. Due to its flexibility, CEE is able to respond rapidly to short-term needs and technological innovations, which, in contrast, is difficult for the long-term basic education of universities. The experiences of the Continuing Education Committee of the Faculty of Engineering, the University of the West Indies (UWI), over the preceding 16 years in providing CEE are summarized and compared with those of several other countries. However, the need for CEE providers to develop more tailor-made courses and programmes, utilizing the electronic media and satellites to give better productivity to the research and development process in industry, is emphasizedItem Management training for senior personnel in the construction industryChin, Myron W.;This paper traces the development of postgraduate and continuing education programmes at the University of the West Indies (UWI) for the management training of engineers and senior personnel in the construction industry in Trinidad and Tobago and other Caribbean territories. It discusses the initial problems encountered in mounting the various programmes and touches briefly on the continuing education model developed for training senior personnel in construction project management. Results of a survey on the effectiveness of such continuing education courses are presented, and the adaptation of these courses to stimulate challenging work experiences, using the case study approach to ensure effectiveness, is recommended
