Panmen met with Prime Minister Dr. Eric Williams and his Cabinet and Dr. Williams set a date for the Tripartite Committee on Sponsorship, to discuss the issue of sponsorship for steelbands. Reports of three committees, music training, employment opportunities and standardization were accepted at the Consultation.Item Savannah Not Place For Pan Finals(Trinidad Guardian, 1-Dec-73) Babb, John; The University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus, Trinidad and TobagoJohn Babb reviews Category C finals of the Steelbands' Music Festival held at the Grand Stand, Queen's Park Savannah. Babb states that it was unfortunate that bands had to compete in such an atmosphere as the Savannah crowd proved difficult for Pan Trinbago officials to control and the expanse of the open air space made it difficult to accentuate the expressions of classical music. Results of Category C finals are provided.Item UWI Checkmated On Pan Development: Assistance of Tuners, Arrangers Needed(Trinidad Guardian, 31-Jan-73) Babb, John; The University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus, Trinidad and TobagoThe Faculty of Engineering at the University of the West Indies has reached a barrier in its work to develop the steelpan as an instrument. At the National Consultation on the Steelband, Dean of the Faculty, Professor Kenneth Julien stated that there is a need to benefit from the knowledge of the people who really know about the steelband - the tuners and arrangers. On the issue of standardization, Prime Minister Dr. Eric Williams appointed a committee, under the chairmanship of Dr. Julien to study the matter.
