dc.description.abstract | In this report Geest's banana division changes hands as Fyffes and the Windward Islands' bid is successful. The joint venture partnership will pay 147.5 million pounds for the business. Clare Wenner of Geest comments on the situation which this new partnership will inherit. Dominica's Prime Minister Edison James comments on whether there are any fears about increasing their debt burden. Also, Renwick Rose of the Windward Islands Farmers Association (WINFA) expresses concern about the deal given the already heavy debt burden of the islands. St. Lucia's Prime Minister John Compton gives his view on the issue. Meanwhile, in Trinidad and Tobago the new coalition government, the UNC/NAR is preparing for budget day on January 10th. Tony Fraser analyses the challenges ahead as the government seeks to outline its economic and social policies for 1996. Caribbean Report examines Caribbean Christmas warmth and cheer in Antigua, Grenada, Guyana and the Cayman Islands. The Christmas spirit in Antigua had all but dampened given the serious damages wrought by hurricane Luis earlier in the year. The mealybug devastated the crops of green peas and sorrel in Grenada but Christmas preparations were in high gear in Guyana and the Cayman Islands. | en_US |
