The UDP won 16 seats and the People’s United Party (PUP), 13. During the election hustings, the UDP accused Prime Minister George Price’s PUP of economic mismanagement, corruption and failing to satisfactorily addressed the security implications of the scaling down of the British garrison. dc.description.tableofcontents3. A new banana import regime came into effect in the European Community (EC). Bananas from Latin America will be subject to a two-million-ton quota and a 20 percent tariff. Imports above that level will attract a punitive tariff of 170 percent. An attempt by Germany to block the introduction of the rules was rejected by the European Court of Justice. The case which is pending in the European Court questions the validity of the ruling. Latin American countries have also lodged their objections with the GATT. Interview with Gerard Kiely, Agriculture Spokesman for the EC (08:56-12:48)en_US
dc.description.tableofcontents4. Non-governmental organizations (NGO) in the region are peeved over their inability to have their voices heard during next week’s CARICOM Heads of Government Conference. The Barbados based, Caribbean Policy Development Centre (CPDC), a regional grouping of NGO’s says consultation between CARICOM officials and NGO’s since the 1991 regional economic conference has been practically nil. Interview with Joan French, Coordinator of CPDC. Sandra Baptiste reports (12:49-15:13)en_US
