Description

The UWI Zoology Museum is the largest collection of zoological specimens in Trinidad & Tobago. The collections are housed in two rooms on the St. Augustine Campus and consist of approximately 70,000 specimens. All of the major groups of animals found in Trinidad & Tobago and the surrounding region are well represented. The collections are particularly strong for reptiles, amphibians, fish, molluscs, crustaceans, corals and insects and with good representation in mammals and birds. The museum is a working research collection but is also open to the public.

The UWI Zoology Museum is made up of several different collections which have come together over the last 90 years:

The University of the West Indies, Department of Life Sciences Collection (merged with specimens from The Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture (ICTA))
CAB International (CABI)
Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC)
The National Museum of Trinidad & Tobago (NMTT)

The UWIZM database also hosts the information on the Barcant Butterfly Collection, which is physically stored at the Angostura Museum in Laventille. As well as Zoology records the database also hosts record for the History, Art and Archaeology collections found on the St. Augustine Campus.
