Abstract

Belize, once a British colony known as British Honduras suffered a devastating hurricane (Hurricane Hattie) in 1961. It destroyed 75 percent of the houses and business places in its low-lying, coastal, city, Belize City. Premier George Cadle Price led a delegation to London to seek funds to finance a new capital. He invited Anthony Greenwood, Secretary of State for the Commonwealth and Colonies, to visit Belize and on this visit a monument was unveiled at mile 49 on the Western Highway, recording that Lord Greenwood dedicated the site for the new capital on 9 October 1965. Description on the back of the postcard "Monument at New Capital Site. The First Phase of the New Capital is scheduled to be completed in 1970". Postcard number 106540.
