From the hills of Laventille comes one of the most popular steelbands, Desperadoes. In the early 1940's they were known for their actions as the steelbandsmen fought many battles with the police and other members of the movement. There have been a string of successes and awards for Desperadoes and they have travelled extensively to play in all the leading concert halls. Some part of their success is owed the to band's corporate partner, the West Indian Tobacco Company (Witco), who over the years assisted the band to reach the zenith of its ability.en_US
