dc.description.abstractA Pan Management workshop was mounted by the Laventille Steelband Festival committee as part of its three-tier Emancipation celebration. In the opening module Dr Lloyd Best discussed his School in Pan Concept. Dr Keith Nurse also shared his belief, that an export processing zone for pan is possibly one way of relieving the economic woes of steel orchestras. Pat Bishop however, was the most memorable speaker as she discussed organizational structure and human resources. Known as 'The First Lady of Pan’ for her work in bringing several steel orchestras into winners' row, Bishop is of the view that “a Steelband isn't a democratic organisation." She stated "it is very hierarchical and depends for its effectiveness upon strong, top-down leadership…”.en_US
