This is a photograph of a monument to Christopher Columbus: navigator; explorer; colonizer, who encountered Trinidad in 1498 on his third voyage. The monument lies in Columbus Square, corner of Independence Square and Duncan Street, east Port of Spain. The statute of Christopher Columbus at the top of the monument was a gift from Hippolyte Borde, an affluent local cacao planter and merchant. The iron statue stands on a monolithic platform which is embellished by four gargoyles with four semi-circular basins below each. This structure then rests at the centre of a large round fountain which is fenced around with chains and surrounded by concrete pathways. There is a big tree on the right of the monument. Two large apartment buildings lie to its left.en
