dc.description.abstract | This is a picture showing a view of one of Barbados’Almshouse. There was an Almshouse in every parish, over the years, these had evolved into a kind of paupers’ hospital, with a corresponding stigma attached. In an article (WIRC, 28) it was stated that “Despite denials by medical officers, it was clear that a discriminatory two-tier class system had evolved where the only clinical care available for maternity cases among the poor was that provided by the almshouses.” Taken from West Indies Royal Commission: Proceedings of Investigations in Barbados.
