Abstract
This is a brief history and evolution of the steelpan, from crude, painted steeldrums to the sophistry of chrome-plated pans. While there is some controversy as to the exact start of the steelband, the pan is the only new musical instrument developed in this century and Trinidad and Tobago's contribution to the world of music.
