dc.description.abstract | Dominica’s Prime Minister Dame Eugenia Charles reports that as she ends her visit to European commissioners involved in the upcoming GATT negotiations, many of them remain undecided about the banana issue. Governor of Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, Dwight Venner, expresses his confidence that OECS states have the capacity to withstand significant shocks resulting from the possible loss of preferential treatment in the upcoming GATT negotiations regarding the banana trade. Interim Haitian president Joseph Nérette in defiance of an OAS backed plan to restore President Jean Bertrand Aristide refuses to step down claiming that the agreement is illegal. Jamaica’s sugar, flour and banana industries struggle to meet foreign and local quotas owing to strike action of more than 15000 workers. Finally, the South African cricket team's tour of the West Indies is being viewed as a momentous occasion in South African, West Indian and world cricket. | en_US |
