2. Hundreds of mourners paid their last respect at the funeral of Sir Vere Cornwall Bird Sr., who was buried at National Heroes Park in St. John’s Antigua. The service of thanksgiving commemorating the life and times of Vere Bird was held at the Antigua Recreation Grounds in a separate ceremony. In his tribute Antigua opposition leader Baldwin Spencer said that despite his failings Mr. Bird was truly an international statesman: “history cannot but be kind and record the enormity and profoundness of this great man contribution to Antigua, Barbuda and the Caribbean and indeed the world civilization.” Prime Minister Lester Bird in recalling the highpoints of his father’s legacy described him as “the undisputed father of the nation” and “a national hero”. Banana producers in the Dominican Republic have expressed concerned about the future of the European Union (EU) regime following the recent ruling by the dispute panel at the World Trade Organization. The regime is under review after protests by US and Latin American producers on unfair favorability given by the EU to producers from former European colonies in the Caribbean and Africa. Cuba is demanding 181 billion US dollars in damages for debts and injuries the country suffered during 40 years hostilities with the US.
