2. Hundreds of mourners paid their last respect at the funeral of Sir Vere Cornwall Bird Sr., who was buried at National Heroes Park in St. John’s Antigua. The service of thanksgiving commemorating the life and times of Vere Bird was held at the Antigua Recreation Grounds in a separate ceremony. In his tribute Antigua opposition leader Baldwin Spencer said that despite his failings Mr. Bird was truly an international statesman: “history cannot but be kind and record the enormity and profoundness of this great man contribution to Antigua, Barbuda and the Caribbean and indeed the world civilization.” Prime Minister Lester Bird in recalling the highpoints of his father’s legacy described him as “the undisputed father of the nation” and “a national hero”.
