Abstract

In Barbados, the non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are identified as one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity. They accounted for 83% of all deaths in 2016. In recognition of the threat that the growing public health burden of the NCDs poses to the country ‘s economic and social development and in responses to the government’s global commitments, the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) has accorded increased priority to NCD prevention and control in the national health agenda. A National NCD Commission was appointed and coordinated efforts for the preparation of a strategic plan for the prevention and control of NCDs. Reducing the major risk factors for NCDs, including unhealthy eating and physical inactivity, and the upward trend in overweight and obesity was listed as one of the three main strategic interventions in the plan.
