Abstract

This is photograph of a monument to Christopher Columbus, a navigator, explorer, colonizer, who encountered Trinidad in 1498 on his third voyage. It stands in Columbus Square, corner of Independence Square and Duncan Street, east Port of Spain. The statute was a gift from Hippolyte Borde, an affluent local cacao planter and merchant. The iron statue of Christopher Columbus stands at the top of a monolithic platform which has four gargoyles with open mouths, or spouts, spewing water into basins below each. The water from the basins then overflows into a large round fountain. A few modest buildings, trees and some children are in the background of this famous landmark.
