3. The resignation of Jamaica’s Finance Minister, Hugh Small continues to create political fallout which has been highlighted at a meeting within the People’s National Party (PNP). Notwithstanding, Prime Minister, P.J. Patterson got the full backing from the National Executive Council (NEC) of the PNP for financial adjustments which were at the heart of Mr. Small’s shocked resignation. 4. Guyanese students occupying the government’s consulate building in Moscow are continuing to demand an increase in financial assistance. Earlier reports had said that the Guyanese Consul, John Hudson had been held hostage along with his family. However, when Caribbean Report spoke to Mr. Hudson, he said while the siege has interrupted his work, his liberty has not been affected. 5. Jamaican sprinter, Merlene Ottey is pinning her hopes on the 200m at the World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany. Ottey moved into the final of the 200m a day after her controversial defeat in the 100m. The gold went to Gail Devers of the US with a time of 10.81 seconds (09:06-10:58)
6. According to an article in the Independent newspaper, ten million people living in a decaying communist system is a recipe for a war waiting to happen. [John Thoreau], literature writer and war-games strategist wrote that the war facing communist Cuba falls part of a wider doomsday prediction. 7. US President, Bill Clinton will meet with five CARICOM leaders later this month at the White House. President Clinton will meet with Guyanese President and Prime Ministers of Jamaica, Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados. A White House statement says the meeting will provide an opportunity for the President and Caribbean leaders to advance their common agenda of promoting democracy, stimulating trade, job creation, protecting the environment and fighting drug trafficking (14:37-15:08)
