In this vintage photograph of Pointe-a-Pierre, the landscape is littered with enormous, metal, oil storage tanks and there are pine trees in the foreground. Pointe-à-Pierre lies north of San Fernando, is situated south of Claxton Bay and on coast of the Gulf of Paria. In 1912, the area consisted of the thriving sugar estates of Plaisance, Bon Accord, Bonne Aventure, Plein Palais, La Carriere and Concorde. However, in 1913, an oil company called Trinidad Leaseholds Limited bought all the estate lands in the area which were found to contain oil since 1857. A modest oil refinery and oil storage deposit were established and Pointe-a-Pierre grew to become one of the most vital refineries in the western hemisphere.en
