This statue in honour of Christopher Columbus, a navigator, explorer, colonizer, who encountered Trinidad in 1498 on his third voyage, is in Columbus Square, corner of Independence Square and Duncan Street, east Port of Spain. It was a gift from Hippolyte Borde, an affluent local cacao planter and merchant. The iron statue stands at the top of a monolithic platform which has four gargoyles with open mouths, or spouts, from which water pours into basins below each. The water from the basins then overflows into a large round fountain. A few modest buildings, trees and some children are in the background of this famous landmark.en
