The Summary: This photo shows a view of the archway entrance to Codrington College in St. John, Barbados. The grand archway is flanked by stately buildings and lush landscaping. This is a stunning example of colonial-era architecture and serves as a historic gateway to the oldest Anglican theological college in the Western Hemisphere, established in 1745. The archway features a central portico with three tall, rounded arches. Front of Postcard – Hamburg-American Line’s Cruise to the West Indies – Cable to Company’s New York Office, from CAPTAIN REESSING: "Barbados, Fe. 9, 1907. “Bluecher on time. Bridgetown is the port and chief town of the island of Barbados. A short line of railway connects it with outlying points. The Savannah is a popular pleasure ground, where band concerts and out-of-door games are enjoyed. Bridgetown has its Trafalgar Square and its Nelson Square, attesting the British sovereignty, although ninety percent of the population of the island is either pure African or of mixed blood. The population is dense, there being about 1,200 inhabitants to the square mile." This is an undivided back postcard.
