Abstract

In this ancient photograph, men and women clothed in long pants, dresses and hats dig pitch out of this pit at La Brea. Some workers stand near the perimeter of the pit with horses and carriages ready to collect and cart away the lumps of pitch. There are wooden single story huts and what appears to be a church near a few coconut palms at the right horizon.
