Distinctive African American Names: An Experimental, Historical, and Linguistic Analysis of Innovation

Abstract

This study examines the rise of distinctive African American personal names through historical data, linguistic analysis, and experimental methods. It demonstrates that naming innovations are shaped by existing cultural and linguistic conventions (especially gender marking) rather than unrestricted creativity and evaluates the role of African linguistic heritage within contemporary American naming practices.
