Abstract

This is a vintage postcard featuring men and women visiting the pitch lake circa the turn of the 20th century. Their attire seems inappropriate for such an outing but it was appropriate for the early 20th century. Directly behind them walk three men in three-quarter length pants and two of them are wearing hats. They may be labourers at the pitch lake. The lake looks bare and flat. There is an oil storage tank and a few trees on the horizon at left. There seems to be a steam boat off shore in the background at right.
