Abstract
In this ancient photograph of Columbus Square, located at the corner of Duncan Street and Independence Square, Port of Spain, the surroundings look thickly wooded. The statue of Christopher Columbus, which was erected here after 1880, was a gift from Hippolyte Borde, an affluent local cacao planter and merchant. Behind the monument, which is fenced around with chains, are several buildings.
