Abstract
A New York Times editorial expresses doubts that an OAS appointed team of civilian monitors will effect a change in Haitian politics. The US House of Representatives passes a bill halting the forced repatriation of thousands of Haitians following last September’s coup. Dominica’s Prime Minister, Dame Eugenia Charles plans to visit key personnel in the European community to rally support in protecting Windward Islands' banana exports in the long running GATT negotiations. A British Member of the European Parliament launches a campaign highlighting the downside of the Christopher Columbus legacy as the 500th anniversary approaches. Former West Indian Captain Viv Richards claims he was neither in attendance nor hurt when police tear gassed protestors outside the Antiguan parliament. Anticipation runs high at the return of the Mighty Sparrow to the Calypso Monarch Competition. Nine performers three of them women will be participating. Finally, CARICOM oil buying states benefit from a drop in the price of oil due to increased competition from the Soviet Union. However, five oil exporting countries including Trinidad and Tobago are being impacted negatively.
