An Exploration into the Role and Contributions of Civil Society Organizations in Shaping National Policies that Facilitate Migrant Integration in Trinidad and Tobago
    (2023) Tribanie, Shelly Ann
The 21st century has ushered in unprecedented world events and the Venezuelan crisis has been characterized by socioeconomic adversities, political instability, and the phenomenon of massive, forced displacement. In Trinidad and Tobago, civil society organizations stood as vanguards ready to assist by providing services to an inflow of migrants and acted as liaisons to those they serve in the realm of policymaking. In lieu of the forgoing, however, exists a microcosm of organizations whose contributions were inadequately captured in the scope of policy development for migrant integration, and this provided rationale for the genesis of this study. Through structured open-ended interviews and the use of qualitative analytical software, twelve (12) organizations were assessed on various thematic areas, and the research produced two (2) major outcomes. The preliminary, delved into the sphere of service delivery and it was noted that a minority of establishments offered crucial migrant-related services, in contrast, the second outcome uncovered that most organizations were never a part of policy-making initiatives that would facilitate migrant integration. Resultantly, the outcomes of this study gave emphasis to avenues that can be taken by civil society actors to address various deficiencies in anticipation of an unpredictable regional environment.
