Denzil 'Dimes' Fernandez Adds Latest to Steelpan Range
(Express, 24-Oct-01) Sookram, Caldeo; The University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago
The Duo Bore Pan is the latest addition to the steelpan range. It was recently invented by Denzil "Dimes" Fernandez. From a humble beginning in Belmont and with a track record of 40 years as a researcher, composer, arranger, tuner, performer, lecturer, educator and consultant on the steelpan, Fernandez said he was curious about pan from his boyhood days with the Belmont Symphony Steelband in the late 1950s. Fernandez’s first version of the Bore Pan came out in July 1984. This pan is crafted with holes around the notes instead of the standard groove as contained in most pans.

Music Came Naturally to Amrit Samaroo
(Express, 1-Dec-99) Sookram, Caldeo; The University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago
This article discusses Amrit Samaroo’s interest in playing the steel pan as he flows in his father, Jit Samaroo's footsteps. With his father as his main tutor, Amrit has developed a love for music. He loves all types of music — classical, calypso, reggae, jazz, Indian, Latin American and parang. Amrit, however, prefers classical composers like Mozart and others, since he believes that to conquer that field of music is a real challenge.
