    This report looks at the commission of inquiry which was to begin to investigate the St. Lucia UN funds scandal, has been adjourned in light of an impending ruling on a writ of prohibition. Contrary to an earlier report, Prime Minister John Compton was in St. Lucia during two days of industrial protest on May 11th and 12th. The European Trade and Agriculture Commissioners told US Trade Representative Mickey Kantor they were unable to meet the US demands to open up their banana market to American producers. The European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, Emma Bonino intends to make it clear to the Clinton Administration that there is disquiet in Europe over proposals to tighten sanctions against Cuba. In cricket, far from West Indies Manager Wes Hall's predictions, the West Indies are stuck in the starting blocks. The Errol Barrow Memorial Lecture in London examines the importance of West Indies cricket as a model for Caribbean unity. Professor Hilary Beckles, cricket historian, was the keynote speaker and comments on the issue. In recent years, Barbados has won medals at the Chelsea Flower Show in London. This year they are back with an exotic display of tropical flowers.

    In this report: Suriname has become the first non-English speaking country to be made a full member of CARICOM. Economists Frank Rampersad and Anthony Gonzales comment on CARICOM's future direction. In St. Kitts/Nevis, the ruling People's Action Movement (PAM), is contesting the latest opinion poll which predicts a win in the general elections for the Opposition Labour Party. The pollster Dr. Pat Emmanuel comments that his procedure is no different from other successful polls conducted in the region. In Jamaica, the group of twelve Western dissidents indicated it was taking legal action to prevent moves by the party leadership to discipline them. As Bermuda takes a critical look at independence, the British dependent territories in the Caribbean do not appear keen on pursuing independence. In Montserrat the independence topic is not an immediate priority as Chief Minister Reuben Meade plans to establish a timetable by 2000. The University of the West Indies and North London University enter into a memorandum of cooperation that will facilitate student exchanges between them.

    In this special edition, Caribbean Report examines the 150th Anniversary of East Indian arrival in the Caribbean. The report looks at East Indian indentureship and its impact on Caribbean societies. In Trinidad and Tobago, the Speaker of the House, Occah Seepaul welcomes the President of India who visited the island as part of the celebration to mark the 150th anniversary. Historian Ron Ramdin examines the importance of the East Indian arrival celebrations. In Guyana, some members of the Afro-Guyanese community reflect on the lingering tensions between the races. Yusuf Ali at the Commonwealth Secretariat looks at how members of the Indian diaspora view their historical past. Dr. David Dabydeen of Warwick University in Britain, comments on whether East Indians in the Caribbean should cling to the past or should they now regard themselves as West Indians. The system of indentureship is explained and the East Indian's contributions to Caribbean societies are discussed. West Indies cricket remains a shining example of unity in the region and Sonny Ramadhin talks about his experiences.
