Captain Cipriani, a planter of Corsian ancestry, was: an early 20th Century labour leader of the Trinidad Workingmen’s Association (TWA) and founder of the Trinidad Labour Party; politician; mayor of the city of Port of Spain. He served with the West Indies Regiment during the First World War. He was impressed with how West Indians adapted to the business of war and concluded that they were capable of self-government. As leader of the TWA he fought for the recognition of trade unions, an eight-hour workday, overtime pay, workmen’s compensation, improved working conditions, greater self-government and constitutional reform. Eight pathways lead up to the statue at the centre of the roundabout.
