    Assessment of the inpact of the Guyana In-service Distance Education (GUIDE) Project: Executive summary

    This summary of the report of a study to ascertain the impact of the Guyana In-service Distance Education Project (GUIDE) on student learning and teacher performance. The study addressed student learning achievement in English, mathematics and science—the three core areas in which the GUIDE teachers were upgraded. A sample of 56 teachers from 36 GUIDE schools, 35 mentors, and 15 tutors was used, while the sample of students for the tests comprised 212 (English), 292 (mathematics), and 269 (science). Data were gathered through the use of a classroom observation schedule, a questionnaire, and the achievement tests. The main findings and the recommendations of the evaluation are presented.

    Work experience programmes in Commonwealth secondary schools

    The data used in this study were derived from published and unpublished studies and from 13 responses to a questionnaire sent to ministries of education in 27 Commonwealth countries. The report examines the rationale and programme objectives of work experience programmes, and presents case studies in schools and off-school premises. The benefits of these programmes are discussed, as well as problems of organization, and suggestions are made for improving their cost effectiveness.
