At the close of the UN World Conference on Women held in Beijing, there were pledges to push for change but it was accepted that implementation would be difficult. The issue of poverty was a focal point at the conference and calls for an international commitment to resources dedicated to women's issues were made. In Trinidad and Tobago, the Public Service Association (PSA) claimed victory in its attempt to have workers stay off the job. The protest is against government's refusal to increase its offer to improve upon the terms of the back-pay settlement to the public servants.
