The research summarized in this publication deals mainly with, 1) research into the methods of teaching reading and activities directly related to reading, 2) reading difficulties, 3) effectiveness of reading tests, and 4) recommendations for improving the delivery of instruction in reading and the establishment of a policy for teaching reading across the curriculum. It is divided into two parts: Part I deals with research on primary schools pupils and Part II with secondary school students. Each part has an index, which identifies the major areas on which the studies are focused.Item On-the-job training: Pre-service teacher training in Trinidad and Tobago(School of Education, UWI, St. Augustine, 2001) George, June M.; Fournillier, Janice B.; Brown, Marie-LouiseThis monograph reports on a study that investigated the On-the-Job (OJT) Pre-Service Teacher Training Programme in Trinidad and Tobago in order to understand its origin, goals, programme design, curriculum, and organization. Data were gathered from in-depth interviews with personnel from the Ministry of Education, eight trainees, and three graduates of the programme; documentary analysis; and limited field observations. Although all indications are that the OJT Programme is making an impact on the preparedness of young, untrained teachers for the classroom, there are structural problems that have plagued the programme. These include: 1) the insufficiency of funds needed to implement the programme, 2) the lack of necessary staff, and 3) the lack of coordination among the various components of the programme and also with the teachers' colleges that receive OJT graduatesItem On-the-job training: Pre-Service Teacher Training in Trinidad and Tobago(School of Education, UWI, 2001) George, June M.; Fournillier, Janice; Brown, Marie-LouiseThe monograph reports on a study that investigated the On- the-Job (OJT) Pre-Service Teacher Training Programme in Trinidad and Tobago in order to understand its origin, goals, programme design, curriculum and organization. It admits to experiencing some degree of analytical difficulty in pinpointing trends because the purposes, foci and target populations of analysis vary. However, despite the problems encountered in analyzing the studies, they are deemed useful in providing a basis from which plans for future studies and local testing can be developed.
