    Determining the adequacy of the Cambridge School Certificate examinations in evaluating the attainment of biology teaching objectives in Jamaican schools

    This study sought to determine the extent to which the Cambridge School Certificate examinations, in the years 1955-1960, adequately functioned in evaluating the attainment of the major objectives of biology teaching in Jamaican secondary schools. Data were derived from: (a) statements of the objectives of biology teaching as understood by 35 Jamaican biology teachers; (b) objectives stated in or deduced from the Cambridge syllabuses, 1955-1960; and (c) objective or objectives tested for by the Cambridge School Certificate examinations, 1955-1960. It was found that while Jamaican teachers recognized eight major objectives of biology teaching, only two of these were either stated or implied in the syllabuses, and only one was tested for by the examinations. It was concluded that the Cambridge School Certificate examinations being administered in Jamaica were inadequate, in that they failed to provide test items and situations that would evaluate the more significant objectives of biology teaching
