The Careenage is located in the heart of Barbados’ capital city Bridgetown. The name was given as this was the place where ships were careened onto a side to be repaired, scrubbed and painted. Also in the background is the St. Cyprian’s Church which was said to have been built well after the end of the Coleridge Building Programme in Barbados (1824 -1842). The cornerstone was laid by the Lady Sendall, the wife of the Governor of Barbados, Walter Joseph Sendall, on 24th February, 1890 and the church was officially consecrated on 26th September, 1894 by Bishop Herbert Bree. At the back of the postcard on the left-hand side the following is written in pen ink: 18-10-09. Dear Moreton/ I arrived here yesterday & had a stroll ashore during the afternoon. Published by Advocate Stationery, Broad-St.Item Bandsman of West Indian Regiment, Barbados(2012-11-28) The Main Library, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados is responsible for making this digital resource available.A bandsman of West Indian Regiment in full dress poses with a musical instrument. The West Indian Regiment was active in the British colonies from 1795–1927 and 1958–1962. In 1858 the West India Regiment adopted a uniform similar to that of the French Zouaves which comprised a red fez wound about by a white turban, red sleeveless jacket with yellow braiding worn over a long-sleeved white waistcoat, with dark blue breeches piped in yellow, white stockings, white gaiters and black shoes. This uniform was retained for full dress throughout the regiment until 1914 and by the band until disbandment in 1927. The regiment was unique amongst colonial units in that it was an integral part of the British regular army. A monument, people and coaches drawn by horses are seen in the outer yard. The Mutual Life Assurance Society Building in Bridgetown, Barbados was built around 1895. Over the years, the occupants of this building has changed, at one time, the building was called The Barbados Insurance Society Building. One unique feature is its full verandah on the second floor which almost fully encircles that entire floor. The Bandstand(The Main Library, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados is responsible for making this digital resource available., 2012-11-27)Hastings Rocks was one of the foremost recreational facilities in the area and was used primarily by the Caucasian population during the colonial period. Later it was utilized by organizations for the hosting of fairs and Police Band concerts. In recent times it has undergone significant changes, notably, the construction of the popular boardwalk extending along its waterfront southward to Accra Beach Hotel and westward as far as the Amaryllis Hotel.
