The unrest was sparked by the government’s decision to increase motor vehicle licenses fees. The unrest led to the imposition of a state of emergency. This follows a minor eruption of a volcano one mile east of the community this week (03:23-04:00)4. CARICOM Secretary General Edwin Carrington has moved to clarify the organization’s position on NAFTA and the region’s bid for membership. Since the CARICOM Intercessional meeting held in St. Vincent in March, the impression given is that Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica have been given the green light to go ahead and seek individual NAFTA membership rather than as a bloc. Ken Valley, Trinidad and Tobago’s ministry of Trade explains Trinidad’s decision. Trinidad and Tobago Foreign Affairs minister Ralph Maraj also commented on Trinidad’s move to be considered eligible to trade with the NAFTA countries (04:01-07:55)5.
