The Agriculture Select Committee of the British Parliament meets tomorrow to hear all sides of the Caribbean banana issue. British Prime Minister, John Major, restates his government’s support for the Caribbean bananas in Europe (07:13-07:57)7. An American network of church groups states that it plans to ship goods to Cuba in spite of the US embargo. The group, Pastors for Peace, has been gathering supplies of food and other goods to take in a convoy. Larry Birns, Cuban expert and Director of Council on Hemispheric Affairs says that although the group is not breaking the law, the plans for the humanitarian caravan might register a point with the incoming administrators (07:58-11:04)8. A recently published report is giving Cuba’s president, Fidel Castro, approximately another 2-5 years in office. The Rand Cooperation says the situation in cash strapped Cuba is now stable but could become explosive. The US State Department today accused Carlos Usilla, Cuba’s third Secretary of the UN Mission in New York of activities inappropriate to his responsibilities (13:47-14:02)10.
