The San Fernando Hill in the background here looks like a mound with a flattened top but by the end of the 1970s had a different shape and was about a third of its original size, due to heavy mining. This Pointe-a-Pierre area used to be noted for its thriving sugar estates. However, in 1913, an oil company called Trinidad Leaseholds Limited bought all the estate lands and a modest oil refinery and oil storage deposit were established.
