Biographical/Historical note

George Padmore was born in Trinidad and Tobago as Malcolm Ivan Meredith Nurse in 1903 and passed away in 1959. He attended St. Mary's College and later became a journalist. He left Trinidad in 1924 with the intention of studying medicine at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. However he changed his career path and enrolled in several universities including, Columbia, New York University, and Howard Law School. He replaced his given name, with George Padmore and became a prominent student activist as well as a member of the Communist Party of the United States of America. He contributed to several newspapers, including the Daily Worker and the Negro Champion. He travelled to Russia in 1930, where he remained and worked for the Red International of Labour Unions and became head of its Negro Bureau until his deportation in 1933. While in Russia, he also edited the newspaper, The Negro Worker. In Britain he continued his activism and worked with the Pan-Africanist movement. Among the persons George Padmore interacted with were: CLR James, Jomo Kenyatta; and Kwame Nkurmah whom he supported and advised.

Scope and Contents note

The collection is comprised of the following: few articles by George Padmore published in the Labour Unity and Negro Champion newspapers, photographs and information about his family, manuscripts for "The Negro renaissance: Claude McKay- West Indian poet; Negro workers vote communist; And Soldiers fight against imperialism; Negro art in America," correspondence which indicate his financial hardships while at Fisk University and other materials making reference to Padmore.
