P a g e | 7 U.W.I Clubs Archive Introduction The U.W.I Clubs Archive is a collection and documentation of data about the clubs from inception in 1964 until Present. The U.W.I Clubs have made a valuable contribution to the development and sustainability of the U.W.I Campus. The clubs have seen many changes from the structure to the functioning of them on campus. They are the heartbeat of the campus and help to foster student’s development and engagement on campus. Many of the persons who have passed through the executives of the clubs have made great contributions to the development of it and thus it is important to highlight them. Many of these persons have gone on to become Guild councillors and even hold high positions in society today. Another purpose of the U.W.I Clubs archive is to highlight the staple events from the Clubs as students will know what events to expect from the clubs in the upcoming years and it will help guild in the incoming executives. It is imperative to preserve the history of the clubs even in times when they fell to times they improved. Family, friends, student development, engagement and togetherness are what the U.W.I Clubs is about. They are the foundation and the heartbeat to student’s life and development on campus. In the 2018/2019 academic year, the clubs grew from 60 to a staggering 85 healthy, active clubs which represented students from each faculty and background does not matter a student race, class, religion, political stance and sexuality. The U.W.I Clubs are sectioned in many parts which include: - 1) Religious 2) Cultural 3) Entertainment 4) Environmental/Agricultural 5) Medical 6) Science and Technology 7) Business 8) Adventurous and fitness 9) Charity and outreach 10) Miscellaneous P a g e | 8 U.W.I Clubs Archive The 2018/2019 academic year saw the 2nd highest ever recorded number of clubs at the St. Augustine Campus with 85 clubs. The highest number ever recorded was 95 clubs in the year 2015/2016 academic year under the tenure of then Vice President, Miss Clarissa Violenus. The first 2 clubs to be formed at the U.W.I STA campus are the U.W.I Rugby Club and the U.W.I Agricultural Society in the year 1964 and 1965 respectively. The inter club committee was an independent position on the U.W.I Guild of Students and then subsequently moved under the Office of the Guild Vice President. The U.W.I Clubs archive will be published in the U.W.I Library to be referenced by students and other clubs. This will have to be updated each year as the clubs keep growing and propelling forward. It will be easy for the past executives to get recommendations from the U.W.I Guild of Students do not matter the year. The U.W.I Clubs Archive will highlight the founders of these clubs and the purpose of it at the STA Campus. In the past year, there were 957 club events recorded which was the highest club events ever recorded and this too will be recorded in the archive together with the top performing clubs of the year which will inspire others to do better and push their limits via innovation. Preserving the rich history of the U.W.I Clubs is imperative in not only knowing where the clubs came from and the development of them over the years, but it will aid in providing a foundation of successfully moving the clubs in the future. It is the first event which is hosted on the first teaching week of the new academic year. It is the integration of all branches of the Guild to create an event which celebrates one people, one nation and ensures that each student is represented. Throughout the week, the National Associations, U.W.I Clubs, sponsors and various departments in U.W.I are present to share information to the new/returning students about what is available for them (the students) on campus. There are also many events and activities which are carried out. They are the various groups on campus that are here to not only do events but engage, teach and inspire students to become better at what they do. The Clubs contribute to the U.W.I experience as support system for many students across campus. This is one of the main ways in which students get involved in co-curricular activities. It is the hub of student interaction, communication and bringing together students of similar interests, goals and passion. Guild Fest fosters creativity, teamwork, togetherness, comradery and a sense of belonging to the U.W.I and gives true meaning to Pelican Pride that they can proudly say they are and represent part of the University of the West Indies. National Associations come out during this week as well in all their splendor to showcase an integration of food, dance, singing and culture. This can be seen at “Taste U.W.I” which is where each National Association comes together and showcase the various foods from their country. There are night agendas which are done at Guild Fest. They highlight the culture, diversity, talent and the spirit of U.W.I which is done via Cultural night, Spiritual night, Talent night and Hall Spirit night. As can be P a g e | 18 U.W.I Clubs Archive seen, Guild Fest is one of the biggest and most extravagant event which welcomes and integrate the students into the U.W.I. The U.W.I Clubs recorded between 120-500 students registered in their club during the week and it gave the clubs that much needed boost in membership to start off the year. Guild Fest 2018 also gave the students the opportunity to meet and greet the Guild Councillors and learn about the various services on campus which is available to them. P a g e | 19 U.W.I Clubs Archive Vice President Committee Members Cultural Night 2018 Hall Spirit Night Taste U.W.I Guild Fest Spiritual Night P a g e | 20 U.W.I Clubs Archive Club Fest Club Fest is centered at a holistic student development via student involvement and engagement through clubs and NGO’s. It was a project initiated by Mr. Tariq Ali, Guild Vice President 2018/2019. Many year 1 students when they come into the University, they meet a new culture and it takes them at least 1 semester to adapt to how the system works and figure out what is best for them especially in a new environment with new people. Most persons in the first semester use that time not only for classes but finding themselves and understanding what suits them the best. After Guild Fest with the Clubs, National Associations and presentation by the Departments, what are there for the students in the second semester? Many of times in the second semester, year one students want to get involve in some co- curricular activity in U.W.I and it is unfair that they must wait until the first semester in year 2 for Guild Fest to understand in what way they can get involve. I think that this process should be ongoing for our students and not only letting them know what support systems are in place for them but to get them involve, which is the main purpose of Club Fest. This event is tailored for students to not only get involve with clubs but with various NGO’s. This will help in outreach and community engagement as students will not only be taking part in the U.W.I environment but outside. At the end of the event, clubs recorded between 30-150 new members joining their club. Most students were year 1 students who were looking to join and interact with clubs. This event was a huge success capturing students of all ages to volunteer at events not only on campus but outside the gates of the University. This helped in strengthening the bonds of the Inter Club Committee and made everyone understand why it is important to learn and grow from each other. At each ICC meeting, there were many team building exercises conducted however in January 2019, there was a hike conducted which the U.W.I Clubs Presidents took part in to develop their personal and professional skills. This helped in bringing together the clubs as one unit and it encouraged friendship. At the event, the clubs shared their similar concerns that they had with their executives’ members and they were able to gather advice from older clubs and mature members in the audience. Many games were done during the in class team building exercise which were games such as the Blind fold test and past the message. This encouraged them to have trust in their executive and to ensure that messages are reached to students in an efficient manner. The hike took place at Turure Falls where the Presidents were encouraged to interact with each other during the hike and rely on each other for their knowledge and strength in situations. The team building exercise was a huge success as after the event, there was more collaboration within the clubs and they became much closer netted as one family. Throughout the year, as a means of establishing and fostering a strong community for students, the club hosts social events such as games retreat or movies night, offers free seminars to advocate the distribution of chemical knowledge, provide outreach opportunities to discuss academic or professional goals and so forth. Additionally, we generally assist in stimulating scientific curiosity and encourage an atmosphere to exchange thoughts and ideas between staff and students. Believed to have been created back in 2012, this club emerged to give students a unique opportunity to experience chemistry beyond the classroom. Through activities or events that were both fun and educational, students were allowed to enhance their understanding of the science, to get more involved in the community (on and off campus) and to help them better appreciate the role chemistry plays in our everyday lives. Lastly, not exclusive to just Chemistry students, any student remotely interested in chemistry is and will always be welcome to participate!! Our club’s purpose is to promote Chemistry as an academic discipline or career option by conducting seminars, social gatherings or games retreat. our club’s aim consists of, but is not limited to the following; ▪ To promote awareness of chemistry as an academic discipline and a career option. ▪ To develop a well-rounded chemistry student who is better equipped to handle life after university. P a g e | 32 U.W.I Clubs Archive ▪ To provide a unifying medium through which chemists can voice their opinions and beliefs and exchange ideas as well as creating an atmosphere of cooperation among chemistry students. ▪ To demonstrate the practical uses of chemistry worldwide through the organisation of lectures and seminars. ▪ To assist chemistry students in achieving the best academic degree through tips and ideas from lecturers and higher-level chemistry student. The UWI StarGazers was officially launched on 26th February 2015. It was formed because students of the PHYS 1001 – Introduction to Astronomy showed an increased interest in astronomy outside of the class room. Current national Astronomy clubs such as the Trinidad and Tobago Astronomical Society (TTAS) had meetings on Saturday’s which were not convenient for students and so the UWI StarGazers was formed to satisfy the astronomical curiosity of the university students. The first executive consisted of five undergraduate students and our academic advisor: • President – Mr. Roston Ali • Vice President – Mr. Brandon Rajkumar • Treasurer – Mr. Travis Ramroop • P.R.O. – Miss Deniel Estrada • Secretary – Miss René Ramlal • Guardian of the Galaxy – Dr. Shirin Haque The goals of UWI StarGazers are: 1. To spread the general knowledge of Astronomy. 2. To offer all aspects of Astronomy to, firstly, members that are students of the UWI and secondly, members that are non-UWI students. 3. To educate and expose members as well as the non-members to the various fields in Astronomy. 4. To provide a forum where anyone can come and enjoy Astronomy. The UWI ISACA Student Group was formed in June 2018 and officially recognized by ISACA International Headquarters in December 2018. ISACA Student Groups (ISGs) encourage education beyond the classroom by allowing students to network and learn from each other, and connect with a supportive group of professionals. While ISGs do NOT require ISACA Student Membership, an ISG gives students the opportunity to get to know ISACA by interacting with professionals at events sponsored by the university and the local chapter. By participating in an ISG, students gain knowledge and experience that moves them ahead of the competition when they graduate. The formation of the club was to allow students who are part of UWI to share experiences of various board games and to find friends with common interests. We have had several people who played games such as chess, monopoly, Magic the Gathering and scrabble. For some of these such as scrabble and chess clubs existed in the past. However, these clubs would often become defunct as they could not make up enough members to continue the club long term. As such several students decided to gather their friends and fellow students to start a new club in 2015 which included as many table top games as possible to create unity within the gaming community as well as to create a club which would have the numbers to sustain long term in the UWI club society. The students who started the drive for this new club were Dmitri Mohammed, Davindra Sooknanan, Damian Jawahir and Scott Wells. In 2017 the Club finally became official being taken over by the club’s first official president Shivendra Harripersad and his treasurer Vineet Gopaulsingh along with their Public Relations Officer Akash (Last name unknown) who worked hard in forming a club with a strong future ensuring that the club would work closely with the guild for years to come. We are a club formed for students to learn, observe and experience the joys of playing different board games as a form of stress relief, fun, safe and enjoyable way to pass the time and to meet new friends who share our interest. The club’s first official meeting was on Thursday, 31st January 2019. The club was formed because a few Christian Independent Baptist students did not agree with some of the ‘contemporary’ Christian clubs and their doctrines on campus and was not comfortable with compromising our standards and biblical beliefs. The executive consists of President/Treasurer- Tyrese Gibson and Vice President/Secretary- Tiffany Jones. PURPOSE Our main objective is to witness to other students by visiting each faculty and talk to students on a 1v1 concerning the bible, spreading posters/flyers and having club discussions where ALL are invited to share opinions concerning controversial topics in society, as well as, hearing what the bible has to say. We also disciple newly saved persons and teaching them about salvation and the Christian walk. Moreover, the distinguishing factor of our club is that we go to the student body and approach them with God’s word and conduct copious Scientific and statistical studies that are done by members of the club to prove that the bible is real in areas of history, mathematics, biology, physics and so much more. We do this by using our various knowledge from our respective degree area of study so that we may reach people through logical discourse and systematic reasoning to prove God’s word is true. This is accomplished through hiking to various nature trails and delivering tours to destinations in Trinidad and Tobago such as Rio Seco (Salybia), Three Pools (Blanchisseusse) and Brasso Seco to name a few. The club was founded in 2010 by Garvin Bobb- Semple and built into what it is today thanks to his guidance and dedication along with Kevin Chan and Jonathan Joseph. Being working class individuals of similar passions for nature, family, fun, adventure, culture and more, they identified the need for alternative means of social relaxation and escape from the trials and tribulations (stress) we all encounter everyday. We are an Adventure Organization dedicated to the customer service, customer satisfaction and customer delivery of a unique Caribbean Outdoor experience infused with different cultures and activities of the West Indies. Our goal is to create and manage a nature expedition that delivers an experience that stimulates your five senses and transcends them…relaxing and revitalizing…your mind and soul. Since the UWI Hindu Society St. Augustine has been around for many generations, it is truly difficult to give an exact estimate year of origin. Safely over two decades ago, the club was formerly known as SPIC (Society for the Preservation of Indian Culture) and over time, the focus has shifted from a cultural and religious perspective, to solely a religious one. This then makes the change in the club name self-explanatory. Our beloved club was formed with the sole intent of bringing together not just the Hindu Community on campus, but the student body. This brings to the forefront, our key focus which aims at promoting unison among the student body, by means of using spirituality as the binding force Weekly Satsangh (gathering for praises through song). The club was founded and formed before 2001. Essentially, linguistics is the scientific study of language and the general populace is very much unaware of this reality. Given that language is the most powerful societal tool accessible to mankind, the aim was to bring linguistics to the people. This was to help non-linguists to understand the underlying structural intricacies that language has to offer and subsequently their societal implications. In other words, helping people understand how language works and how important it is in society and hopefully through this holistic understanding, appreciate language and use it in a positive manner. As for the first executive, information pre-2001 is more or less non-existent or rather inaccessible (at this time), however in 2001, Nadine Philip wrote to Gerard Best, Inter-Campus Clubs Councillor to start back the Society. As was alluded to earlier, the club aims to bring linguistics to the people. To achieve this, in our club meetings (every Thursday @CLL Room 3 from 1-3 PM), we engage in activities that combine educative and focussed elements of the field with a heavy emphasis on team building and having fun. This can be compared to educational computer games that the majority of us were exposed to as children, having fun whilst gaining a wealth of knowledge. This is also achieved through fieldtrips and collaborations for events etc. Also, we strive to help those in need with regards to linguistics courses. We have an in house programme called LAPS (Linguistics Assistance Programme) where students who require assistance of capacity is peered with a tutor (another student well versed in the course) and the end goal is to ensure the former is adequately edified and primed for exams. Our club is all inclusive meaning that affiliation is not limited by being a Linguistics Major or Minor. In fact, we currently have a member who majors in Acturial Science. At the end of the day, once you are a lover of language, literature or linguistics, we aim to carry you on a life changing journey that can or may have significant bearing on your professional or general life in the future. The following pictures are highlights from the Linguistics Open and Research Day on 23rd April 2018. While not hosted by the club officially, the DMLL (Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics) had the event to expose the general public (secondary schools) to linguistics. This was aimed at given them an informal introduction to the field in the hope that when they do P a g e | 147 U.W.I Clubs Archive make it to UWI, it is considered as a degree of choice. Apart from that, it was just to show the secondary students how fun linguistics can be and to dispel any uncertainties and untrue clichés about it as most secondary schools do not teach it. Information about the executive committees during that period have been difficult to source and thus have been left undocumented. In addition to that, the executive committees from 2012-2014 have been deemed non-existent. While candid answers have not been provided, it can be posited that there was no committee at that period of time. During my year and a half stint as a member, I was told the club was disbanded a couple of times. Estimations can conclude that said disbandment may have occurred during this period. We encourage students to develop their own businesses and companies that can contribute to research and development and to the economy of our great nation. Whatever type of company one develops we think that it important that part of the income earned should be used for Research and Development. We encourage students to develop start-ups and to fail. We see failure as part of the learning process. The name of the club is certainly related to that metaphor, i.e., the red pill represents knowledge, freedom, uncertainty and the brutal truths of reality. In our club’s organisational structure, we wanted it to resemble a corporate model. For example, the executive is made up of a Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, Chief Marketing Officer, Chief Financial Officer etc. These executive titles are taken from the corporate world instead of using common executive terms found in clubs such as President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. Practice makes perfect ☺. The club was founded by Terry Gavaskar Ramnanansingh. Terry was a strong lead for the club and has led many student-oriented events at the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS) at The UWI and has served as the post graduate student representative at Medical Sciences Students’ Council (MSSC) for four years. At the Faculty of Medical of Sciences there is a sense of an elitist culture. We wanted to break that mode of thinking and offer an inclusive club to all students. We particularly wanted to get opinions and ideas from those who don’t follow the norm or elitist figures at the Faculty of Medical Sciences. The club’s goal is to engage students in entrepreneurism and research development. We believe that this is vital for the future economic sustainability of Trinidad and Tobago. Although we are a student club at the FMS, we want to develop students’ minds so that they can meaningfully contribute to Trinidad and Tobago, thus our club does not simply offer extracurricular recreational activities to students. We are hoping to introduce students to the complexities of economic globalisation. P a g e | 175 U.W.I Clubs Archive A key component of the club is research, but in order to sustain research properly it requires vast amounts of funding. Thus, we believe entrepreneurism is important to develop funding for research. We hope that students who receive training under Red Pill can develop innovative products that would have high market value that would add to the economic prosperity of Trinidad and Tobago. Red Pill was founded on 21st February 2012. Purpose of Club: To engage and promote research, entrepreneurism and philanthropy. Aims: 1) To develop innovative products 2) To engage in research with particular interest in medical research 3) To provide a sense of comradery and belonging to students 4) To engage in entrepreneurism to sustain research as well as provide economic viability of the club and by extension the nation 5) To challenge ideas that negatively affects students, so that we bring out a positive framework for student development Our annual Fun Day Team (2017): P a g e | 176 U.W.I Clubs Archive Our former Chairwoman, Stacy Rampersad, 2016 - 2017 (left);and Chief Executive Officer, 2016 - 2017, Krystal Sukha (right) at the our annual “Lift Off” event that promotes research and entrepreneurism P a g e | 177 U.W.I Clubs Archive Former Chairman, 2014 - 2015, Terry Gavaskar Ramnanansingh (centre) at Red Pill’s Diabetes Awareness Campaign P a g e | 178 U.W.I Clubs Archive THE EXECUTIVE: PAST TO PRESENT Year 2012 - 2013 Chairwoman: Peggy Supersad Chief Operations Officer: Varnam Roop-persad Founder: Terry Gavaskar Ramnanansingh Year 2014 - 2015 Chairman: Terry Gavaskar Ramnanansingh Chief Executive Officer: Adam Taylor Chief Administrative Officer: Laura Dookeram Chief Operations Officer: Shazim Kallan Chief Financial Officer: Marlene Cuffee P a g e | 179 U.W.I Clubs Archive Chief Marketing Officer: Joy Rogers Year: 2015 Chief Executive Officer: Justin Seelal Chief Administrative Officer: Rhea Rambarran Chief Operations Officer: Andrew Balcon Chief Financial Officer: Sabrina Maharaj Chief Marketing Officer: Mikhail Charles Chief Legal Officer: Andre Earle Advisor for Domestic Violence Campaign: Dalini Rampersad Advisor: Sean Maraj Year: 2016 - 2017 Chairwoman: Stacy Rampersad (eventually became Chairwoman & CEO) Chief Executive Officer: Krystal Sukha (resigned within term) Chief Administrative Officer: Elisha Sankar Chief Operations Officer: Andrew Balcon Chief Financial Officer: Mikhail Charles Interim Chief Marketing Officer (1 month): Kayshav Sewdass Chief Marketing Officer: Rhea Rambarran Year: 2018 - Present Chairwoman & Chief Executive Officer: Elisha Sankar – B.Sc. Shalimar UWI Motivated Mentors Outreach Network Shalimar UWI Motivated Mentors Outreach Network (S.U.M.M.O.N.) is a UWI Club for female students that has operated on Campus since 2008. Its aim is to sensitize UWI students to the needs of the less fortunate. SUMMON got its start when a group of university students who had been frequenting Shalimar Student Centre for their own personal and professional formation sought to collaborate with the personnel at Shalimar to form a club on campus which could offer the wider student society the benefit of the leadership formation available at Shalimar and provide more students with the opportunity to serve the disadvantaged in the wider community through outreach activities in schools of the area and beyond. These student leaders – Kimberley Chang, the first President, and Cyrone Redhead, the first Secretary, (there was no Vice-President position at the time) – worked with Dr Donna Comissiong of The UWI and Melanie Pouchet of Shalimar to draft the SUMMON constitution in 2008. Kimberley was directly responsible for having SUMMON included in the ranks of the UWI Guild of clubs. Both Dr Comissiong and Dr Michelle Scobie have served as Faculty Advisors for SUMMON. SUMMON aims to encourage its members to give of their time and talents, and show them the beauty of serving others less fortunate than themselves. SUMMON trains UWI volunteers in leadership and character building virtues and helps the mentors to transmit these virtues in activities with children in schools with few resources. The young mentees are helped to develop good study habits, and to improve in their family and other inter-personal relationships. As their commitment is a weekly encounter with the children on a one-to-one basis as a ‘big sister’, the young university students learn to manage their class schedules and be responsible and reliable future leaders of society. History Society The U.W.I. History Society is a student-led club which seeks to promote and explore the disciplines of Caribbean and World History in and out of the university’s campus. Often, the importance of history is lost as individuals become enveloped in current affairs and as priority is placed on the promotion of other disciplines. Therefore, the History Society aims to help persons understand the utmost relevance of the past to the present and embody a platform through which historical events, cultures and elements can be explored. The club was formed just about a decade ago. However, there are no records of past executive members up until 2017 as the club was defunct for a few years. The club was created out of the need to build awareness about the importance of history and to provide an avenue for learning about past events and affairs through leisurely and recreational activities. The club kickstarted and in doing so, challenged the stigma of history as a dull discipline and painted it as a liberating experience and a crucial subject for understanding the current state of the world. The main goal of the History Society is to serve as a platform through which students and other individuals can enhance their knowledge about historical events outside of a classroom setting and therefore, recognize the importance and develop a greater appreciation for the discipline. Further, although the society explores history on a global level, being situated in the Caribbean has prompted some emphasis on bringing to the forefront the rich history of the region. Through panel discussions, field trips, seminars, film screenings and other unique projects, we strive to increase knowledge about the many civilizations around the globe, various wars and revolutions, different cultures and historically significant persons, places and time periods. Overall, it is our hope to facilitate learning and an increased appreciation for the discipline of history. Gabriel became the first President of the club while Nicolette served as its first Secretary. From the new membership, Rashtee Bridgemohan, Elizabeth Ho, Charis Seejattan and Celine Koomlalsingh were elected as Vice President, Treasurer, PRO and Editor, respectively. We aim at creating a platform to promote the love for reading and writing; whereby avid readers, along with writers, can passionately express their thoughts on novels of varying genres, together with sharing stories of their own creation. We strive to increase awareness of local and regional authors by attending and hosting book launches and desire, in the long term, have a yearly publication. Augustine Meme Society The club as indicated by its name is, “The UWI ST. Augustine Meme Society”, a society dedicated to the creation, sharing and, most importantly, the enjoyment of memes. Club E-mail: uwistamemesociety@outlook.com Club Instagram: @uwistamemesociety Club Facebook: UWI STA Meme Society https://www.facebook.com/groups/628506764148960/ We were established in the year 2018, academic year 2017/2018, after noticing that interactions on the Facebook group, “UWI Guild STA Student Complaints Committee,” while highlighting integral problems faced by the student body, were also done via the latest hype- Memes. The initial idea was sparked when our 5 founders were notified of the requests by the student body for a Meme Society given the exceptionally high (serious and sometimes ridiculous) ‘meme-worthy’ content on the group and occurring on campus. Being good friends and avid lovers of memes, we concluded that the initiative should fall upon our hands to supply the student body with their demands. After being given the clearance and assurance that the group would be accepted by the Guild, the constitution was written up, logos were designed, and social media accounts created by our humble group of 5 meme-lords and ladies. P a g e | 230 U.W.I Clubs Archive This academic club aims to provide a space where students can feel free to express themselves through the creation and sharing of memes. We aim to please… via memes! We believe memes are the future as even now we can see their incorporation into the daily workings of society- big corporations and the simple vendor use memes in advertising to boost sales, media houses have taken to incorporating memes in their natural journalism process, we can even spot the appearance of memes as society express their concerns with the government, the country, themselves. Much like art, music, drama, memes are now a vital tool this generation uses as a means of expression and relaxation. Taking into consideration the mental and physical demands of pursuing a degree, we concluded that creating a society dedicated to memes would champion for the interest of the student population as a form of stress relief while also allowing self-expression. We also aim to use this club as a platform to communicate any matters directly or indirectly affecting the student body and, to promote inter-faculty, inter-club and, inter-personal interactions. Geography was first offered at the St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies in the 2005/2006 academic year. Previously the study was only available at the Mona campus, so this step offered greater opportunities for those students wishing to pursue the discipline around the Caribbean. Three years later, geography students wanted more representation at the St Augustine campus. The drive for visibility started during the Natural Sciences Week, where enterprising young geographers Kimberley Chang, Kara Roopsingh and Amanda John sought to have a Geography booth at the event. After seeing the efforts of these Geography students at Natural Sciences Week, senior Geography lecturer Dr. Paul Shaw suggested the idea to create a Geography Club. Thus, the students went around to all three year groups to garner support by way of participation in the jersey logo creation. This was well received by the final year geography class where the logos designed by geographer Joanne Maynard were chosen, who was eventually asked to come on board. The students worked hard behind the scenes to get the group on its feet. The group was approved by the Guild of Students as an official UWI club on December 18th, 2008. Our group aims to promote geographical awareness and innovation through the interaction of professionals, geography students, and anyone who has a vested interest in learning about the world around us all P a g e | 247 U.W.I Clubs Archive # Image 1 above shows the UWI STA Geography Club (2018/2019) at their hike to Rampanalgas Fa lls. Foundation The UWI H.O.P.E. Foundation is a non-profit charitable organization that has been established on the UWI St. Augustine Campus. This group is a branch of the original H.O.P.E. Foundation which was founded in Fyzabad by our past President, Shurlander Joseph. This organization operates by its slogan, helping others prosper every day. It is a group with a difference willing to make a change in the community of St. Augustine and its environs. On November 15th, 2015 Shurlander Joseph started the H.O.P.E. Foundation to help underprivileged children within the Fyzabad community. Moved by the level of poverty and hardships the kids she encountered experienced, and the measures they had to take in order to survive, Shurlander launched a group aimed to help make a difference by giving back and offering help these children, who often times came from troubled homes. Ms. Joseph then decided to form a chapter on the UWI St. Augustine campus as a way to spread the positivity and good will that the organisation was achieving in South. By forming the UWI chapter, Shurlander aimed to have an active avenue for students to volunteer their services all year around without personal gain. The UWI H.O.P.E. Foundation was officially established on October 9th, 2017 under its first executive of students, who later became great friends. By starting this organisation, Ms. Joseph aimed to bring together young leaders and students from all backgrounds to make a difference within the St. Augustine environs through commitment to the NGO. The foundation is aimed at promoting proper nutrition and a healthier lifestyle of less fortunate children while inspiring them to rise above their difficult circumstances. We aspire to re- establish and regain the love, peace and unity we once had as a society with our main objective being, to provide kids with the tools for upward mobility to become leaders of tomorrow. Its genesis is in the Black Power Movement of the early 1970s, with a primary objective to sensitise and educate students about the heritage and culture of Africa, as well as the African diaspora. The word ‘Afrikan’ is spelt with a ‘k’ to reflect the original African language, which has no ‘c’. The official symbols of the UWI Afrikan Society are Sankofa, ‘Learning from the Past to Secure the Future’ and Gyenyame, ‘I Fear None Except God ’ Over the years, UWIAS has developed into a performance group, expressing the African culture through dancing, drumming, poetry and theatre. And, since 2009 we have staged annual cultural productions aimed at enlightening our audiences on various aspects of culture and other issues affecting our society. P a g e | 272 U.W.I Clubs Archive UWI ROVER SCOUT CREW (UWIRSC) Our club is a crew of young people having fun and growing together to create a better world. The club was formed in 2017 under the leadership of the first Senior Crew Leader (SCL) Siddeeq Shakoor. The executive of the club included Assistant Senior Crew Leaders (ASCL’s) who were responsible for various aspects of the running of the crew including Safety, Instruction (Devante Leehue,) Finance (Jonathan Sinanan), Resources (Rondell Ramdass), Marketing (Damian Clarke) and Program (Josh Sinanan). The club was initiated to be the first formal Rover Scout Crew in the country. Rover Scouts are part of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM) which is a non-governmental international youth organization. Rover Scouts are typically between the ages of 18-26. The UWIRSC aims to promote self-development of young adults by providing a forum where various life skills can be learnt. Rather than a traditional formal classroom setting, the club embraces the outdoors and a more relaxed style of imparting knowledge and skills. Key to the crew’s ideals is engaging in adventurous activities as a team such that each member feels that they are part of something bigger than themselves and become better persons together who will then go on to make a significant positive impact on other individuals and their community. The club is guided by the fundamental principles of Scouting, the Scout Law and Promise. On a global level, we aim to carry out the vision of empowering youth of the founder of Scouting Lord Robert Baden-Powell.
