1. In Georgetown Guyana, 35 year Bharrat Jagdeo was sworn in as the youngest President of the country. In his acceptance speech Jagdeo outlined his vision for Guyana and extended a hand of friendship to the opposition who have been vocal in their condemnation of his appointment following the resignation by Janet Jagan due to poor health. 2. In two live interviews with BBC reporter Orin Gordon candidates for the Commonwealth Secretary General position New Zealand foreign minister Don McKinnon and his Bangladesh rival Farooq Sobhan reiterate why they are best suited for the post and deserve the backing of the Caribbean region. Siobhan discusses the need to have an Asian candidate with diplomatic experience, willing to promote diversity within the multiethnic organisation and address international economic issues and problems of development within small island states (03:59 -07:43)
3. Eight members of the US Coast Guard were cleared of illegal action in trying to prevent Cuban refugees from reaching US shores. Anti-Cuban exiles have been vocal in their dissent of the use of pepper spray and water cannons against Cubans who are detained while crossing Florida straits by boat. Tom Gibb interviews Cubans seeking refugee status and reports on the increase in the number of Cubans seeking to find refugee status in Florida with the help of smugglers and speedboats (07:44 – 11:07)
4. Trinidad and Tobago sprinter Ato Boldon pulled out of the World Championship in Spain due to a hamstring injury and cannot compete in the 100 and 200 meters sprint races. BBC correspondent Michael Castillo reports on the extent of Boldon injury (11:08 – 13:03)
5. Jessica Robertson reports from Trafalgar Square on what has been described as the last solar eclipse of the millennium (13: 04 – 15:25)
