Steelpan Newspaper Clippings

The Steelpan Newspaper clippings was established in 2013 with a grant from the Campus Research and Publication Fund of the University of the West Indies St. Augustine. The project was initiated by Dr. Jeannine Remy a lecturer with the Department of Creative and Festival Arts. The primary goal of the project is to archive, preserve and organize newspaper clippings on the topic of steelpan found in the West Indiana and Special Collections Division at the Alma Jordan Library, the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine. So that researchers and students of the art form can easily access information related to the topic of steelpan.

    The Commonwealth Arts and Cultural Foundation, in association with Trinidad and Tobago High Commissioner Garvin Nicholas hosted the Steelpan Awards 2011 at the Trinidad and Tobago High Commission, London on July 26. The event was held to celebrate the diamond jubilee of the Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra (TASPO) and the Golden Jubilee of the Dixieland Steel Orchestra.

    Future Arrangers Tune Up

    The Pan-in-Schools Coordinating Council (PSCC) organised an intensive three week workshop in "Panorama Arranging" which was fully sponsored by energy company bpTT. The workshop involved 30 music students and teachers with ambitions to arrange tunes for the Panorama steelband competition.

    A series of intensive music workshops catering to music students are being administered by the Pan in Schools Coordinating Council (PSCC), fully sponsored by bpTT. The Pan Playing Techniques and Music Composition workshops are presented to over 60 secondary school students.

    Challenging Pan Activity in UK and Central Europe

    Terrence "Terry" Noel, founder and leader of the BT Melodians has been busily involved in a project funded by the Performing Rights Society of the UK. Noel's BT Melodians Steel Orchestra was selected to participate in the scheme called Adopt a Composer, which will see the ensemble interpreting the music of a selected composer. Additionally, Noel was in Belgium tutoring 40 young music students from Ossett Academy from West Yorkshire in the rudiments of pan skills.

    Pan Through the Generations

    Members of Generation to Generation Steel Orchestra entertained their parents, friends and specially invited guests with a repertoire of Christmas and religious music at the home of Roseford and June Clouden at Paradise Gardens, Tacarigua. Roseford Clouden is founder and leader of Generation which was formed some six years ago.

    Despers Smokes 'em at Fiesta Final

    Witco Desperadoes Steel Orchestra has walked away with the conventional band prize in Pan Trinbago's inaugural National Republic Pan Fiesta competition at the Queen's Park Savannah. Despers delivered a flawless rendition of "This Melody Sweet", composed by Winsford Des Vignes and arranged by Clive Bradley.

    Miss World Meets the Pan Men

    At the first major show in the Queen's Park Savannah, Miss World, Miss Carol Joan Crawford of Jamaica will mingle with steelbandsmen and the United States Marines in "Carnival Panorama". Miss Crawford will present the Panorama Steelband Champion with a silver cup and in turn, she will be presented with a full size tenor pan mounted on a stand as a gift.

    Point Pan on the Move

    Steelband World Mourns Legend Bertie Marshall

    Pan School Looking for New Home

    Trinity All Generations Steel (TAGS) and School of the Arts is an ongoing community outreach programme established in 1994. The school offers music education for youth in the Port-of-Spain area and its environment, at little cost. TAGS has been unceremoniously thrown out of the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity and is now seek an alternative location.

    Saving Pan Trinbago

    As the steelband movement faces challenges in Trinidad and Tobago, Pan Trinbago's main objective should be becoming an organization that is in full control and successfully managing the business of pan. To deal with these challenges, Pan Trinbago should seriously consider adopting the model of a successful organization such as FIFA (The International Federation of Association Football).
