Item Book of Abstracts(2013-07-25)Item BUSMASTER – An Open Source Tool(2012-09-26) Lorenz, Tobias; Borg, AndrewItem COPS Collaborative online problem solving(2013-04-15) Bachu, EshwarCOPS (Collaborative Online Problem Solving) is an online multiplayer game which was developed using a computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) game based model. COPS aims to improve the problem solving skill of novice programmers by requiring them to collaboratively build program flowcharts. This paper presents the results and challenges of an experiment conducted using secondary school students between the ages of 14 and 17 who are preparing to write the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) information technology exam. Initial findings indicate students prefer COPS to paper based, traditional problem solving exercises and that students were encouraged to work through the assigned tasks to completion.Item A dairy management system for The University Field Station (UFS) that employs a service-oriented architecture and mobile voice data entry mechanism(2013-04-15) Karleen, LallThe aim of this research project is to build a Dairy Management Information System for the Dairy parlour operations at the University Field Station (UFS). One of the major challenges in the Dairy Cattle Milking operations is the proper and timely collection and entry of data on a daily basis. This research seeks to solve this issue through employing a mobile voice mechanism for data entry. A Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) framework is also proposed to enable remote access and to support more efficient collection and management of data in the UFS Field Management System.Item The design and implementation of an enculturated web-based Intelligent Tutoring System(2012-10-03) Mohammed, PhaedraAccommodating for learner diversity based on cultural backgrounds has not yet been a major personalisation focus until recently. Increasing numbers of Internet-ready devices have propelled e-Learning forward such that these deficiencies in cultural-awareness can no longer remain unattended. Despite being investigated from an instructional design standpoint, the enculturation of digital learning environments has largely been theorized, necessitating manual enculturation by experts, instructors and even students. Consequently,enculturated learning environments are limited in practice. In this paper, a preliminary design for building a web-based Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) is described together with the features and intended functionality of the various components. This work contributes a practical approach that was implemented and evaluated using two concrete systems within the domain of Computer Science education. An analysis of the findings and empirical evidence reported in the study supports the viability of the approach taken and reveals that intelligent tutoring systems benefit from enculturation.Item Emotion-oriented eCommerce(2012-10-03) Leon, Simone; Nikov, AlexanderEmotion-oriented eCommerce is a new and fascinating research field that poses many opportunities to understanding the purchasing behaviour of online consumers. Computational models can be easily applied to analyze and assess predictive behaviour in an eCommerce environment. Intelligent emotion recognition techniques using computational intelligence are presented. The purpose of this particular study is to develop a model for emotion-oriented eCommerce systems. Developments within this field of study were noted. Electroencephalography has been identified as the preferred method of emotion technique.Item Fingerprint ridge orientation estimation using a modified Canny Edge Detection Mask(2012-10-03) Phillips, Laurice; Bernard, MargaretFingerprint recognition is arguably the most popular biometric used in authentication of individuals today. One critical step in the process of automatic fingerprint recognition is the segmentation of a digital fingerprint image into smaller regions where local image features can be more easily enhanced, analyzed or extracted. In this process it is essential to accurately estimate the fingerprint ridge orientation within the local region so that the fingerprint’s core singular points can be identified. This research paper proposes a novel approach to estimating the local ridge orientation by using an image convolution operation based on a Canny Edge detection mask. Experimental results illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm in establishing the dominant edge direction of the ridge.Item Generating patentable ideas(2013-04-15) Hosein, PatrickThe generation of high quality patents is now a major focus of many high technology companies. Many legal battles are also being fought over intellectual property (such as the one between Apple and Samsung). However, there is no repeatable process for generating a patentable idea. If this were the case then countries such as China would have, by now, overtaken the USA in creating novel products (although China now files more patents). It is also now widely accepted that Patents (which must be novel) are much more valuable (to both companies and universities) than even journal publications. In this presentation I will use a number of my granted patents to illustrate the methods followed to come up with the respective novel ideas.Item Improving students’ creative skills using creativity techniques in a social network(2013-04-15) Ragbir, DianaThere is a global call for creativity to improve and expand the knowledge economy. The production of more creative individuals from our education system requires that creativity skills be taught alongside existing curriculum. This research investigates the requirements for developing a system for teaching creativity skills alongside the original course curriculum. The research focuses on two aspects of creativity – the creative process and the aspects of the environment for supporting creativity. Several creativity theories will be used and include Wallas’ Creative Stage Theory, Resnick’s Creativity Spiral, De Bono Thinking Steps and Roger von Oech’s Creative Strategies. An online social network has been chosen as the ideal environment for supporting creative work. Processes based on creativity theories will be integrated into the social network together with design principles for Creativity Support Tools (CSTs). This presentation will introduce the system’s design, highlight the contributions of this research in relation to the current research in the field and give insight into future research projects resulting from this work.Item Learning computer programming through game playing(2012-10-03) Bachu, Eshwar; Bernard, MargaretIn this paper we present an approach for teaching and learning Computer Programming through game playing. This activity is intended to complement traditional teaching of concepts. The focus is on building program comprehension rather than program generation. In playing the game, students improve their ability to read and understand a program written in a specific language and to follow the logic in a program. They build speed in comprehension, as is required in learning any language. To win the game, students have to play certain steps repeatedly, using different strategies, and with time constraints. This repetitiveness reinforces learning. Once they master the basic elements of a program, they will experience less frustration in coding solutions for more challenging problems. The preliminary results with students using this gaming activity are encouraging.Item An Online Multiplayer Game for Collaborative Problem(2012-09-25) Bachu, Eshwar; Bernard, MargaretTeaching computer programming to novices has always posed a major challenge to educators, most novices acquire basic programming skills but they are unable to utilize them in a meaningful way to solve many of the non-routine problems which are presented to them. As a result, they do not achieve any level of programming fluency. Collaboration has been identified as a useful tool to help overcome this problem if utilized at the right times during the programming/problem solving process. This paper presents a review of computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) concepts, collaboration in programming and the problem solving domain. Finally, a design for a gaming application of CSCL (COPS) to help improve the problem solving ability of novice programmers is presented.Item Personalization of web based interactive systems using computational intelligence techniques(2012-10-03) Rambharose, Tricia; Nikov, AlexanderThe research presented in this paper focuses on personalization of WBIS using computational intelligence (CI) methods. The scope of this research is first given and then developments in each aspect are explained. Taxonomy for personalization of WBIS using eight identified CI techniques is presented. Comparison of these eight CI techniques is made and reasons given for selection of a neuro-swarm hybrid CI model for investigation of personalization. A created MATLAB add-in for implementation of this neuro-swarm model is then used to show superior performance of PSO over backpropagation for NN training. A model for personalization of eLearning systems by neuro-swarm determination of learning style is presented. Results of a simulation for the personalization of the structure of a course in Moodle, using the neuro-swarm model, are then given.Item Photos taken at the DCIT Conference 2011(2012-09-25)Item QOS-based pricing model and scheduling for IP based cellular networks(2013-04-15) Sekhon, RamneekMobile network traffic has grown exponentially in recent years, and it is expected that this trend will continue in the future. Important driving forces include new affordable smartphones, and the many new connected devices on the market. Also, the rollout of faster HSPA+ and LTE networks is expected to improve the customer experience. Therefore, it is critical to examine feasible ways to manage the huge traffic increase and the hunger from new Internet service applications, especially video or other rich media, to prevent congestion and customer dissatisfaction. One of the alternatives is to increase the capacity by using more bandwidth, but this too is limited by the available spectrum. We expect that at some point, the demand will exceed the capacity. In this work, we have tried to address the above issue by proposing a dynamic and flexible pricing model that limits the network congestion and enhances the service quality for the user while allowing wireless operators to make a profit even when capacity becomes limited. It differentiates between different service plans based on the QoS Class Indicator (QCI) requirements of the applications. Application and service differentiation enables optimal management of precious network resources while providing desired QoS to the end user. For assessment and design of learner experience a checklist is developed. By a ridge-regression-based model the most critical of learning experience dimensions and their checklist items are determined and relevant eLearning system improvements recommended. A case study with an eLearning system in neo-tropical animal production is carried out. By applying the framework the most critical for learner experience design checklist items and problems are allocated. LX design guidelines and improvement recommendations are defined. Further developments of the framework are suggested. By help of the framework important LX dimensions and items can be quickly allocated and thus LX-oriented design of eLearning systems in the area of neo-tropical animal production supported.Item Using social networking technologies to harness creativity amongst students(2012-09-26) Ragbir, Diana; Mohan, PermanandThis paper outlines proposed research into using a social network to harness creativity amongst students.
