Item March on the Barbados Telephone Company(2012-11-16)Representatives of the Barbados Workers Union marching through Broad Street en route to the headquarters of the Barbados Telephone Co. Ltd. in support of worker, David Giles. The Barbados Telephone strike of 1981 was one of the BWU's more intense industrial relations battles. Here General Secretary Frank Walcott together with his team strides determinedly into action. Dominica became independent in 1978, so this photograph was taken prior to then.Item Codrington College Barbados(2012-11-19) Poyer, [John]The buildings and grounds of the college. The surrounding landscape features palm trees, lawn and a large pond. On front, bottom right hand corner is inscription "Poyer photo". Codrington College, located in St. John, Barbados in the Caribbean is the oldest Theological College in the western hemisphere. The college is named after Christopher Codrington III (1668-1710). He was the son of a very prominent Barbadian, Christopher Codrington II, who was at one time Governor General of the Leeward Islands.Item [G. The time period is estimated to be early 1900s. The name is supposedly [Queen’s Park] which is located in the capital Bridgetown. In 1783 the large building, originally King's House, was the residence of the Commanding Officer of the British Troops in the West Indies. Today the park is a lovely place to visit while visiting Bridgetown.Item [Mill at Morgan Lewis, St. Andrew, Barbados, West Indies](The Main Library, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados is responsible for making this digital resource available., 2012-11-23)The Morgan Lewis mill is located in the parish of St. Andrew, Barbados. This mill was the last working mill in Barbados which stopped operating in 1947. It is one of two sugar windmills in the Caribbean that has been restored. The restored mill was reopened in 1999. It was listed in the 1996 World Monuments Watch. The image shows the front of the mill. At the back of the postcard: "Greetings, I have just spent the afternoon on the beach making the most of this beautiful weather. Am sure it’s going to be very cold this time next week in NY. This cruise is now almost over, we have only one more [town] to operate, that is tomorrow in St, Vincent. Wish you could be here to have a pleasant lunch with us, ah well, will have one for you." It is located at the foot of the Pitons near the town of Soufrière on the west coast of the island. It is part of the Soufrière estate which consists of 2,000 acres of land. The estate was presented by King Louis XIV in 1713 to three Devaux brothers from Normandy in recognition of their services to France. The postcard depicts the entrance of the gardens in the colonial period. Two male visitors to the gardens are in formal dress at the entrance. There are benches and a lamp which suggest that the area was used for outdoor entertainment. This area was owned by the War Department. It was purchased by the government in December 1905 and opened to the general public. Government House is located in Morne Fortune near Castries. The brick construction was completed in 1895. The black and white picture shows the entrance to the house which sits among Green foliage. It stands at the eastern end of Broad Street in the capital city of Bridgetown. The picture shows the fountain surrounded by palms and other vegetation. Resting on the side of the fountain is a bicycle. The back of the card says “My dear I can’t write by today’s mail, so must send this to let you both know we are well. [M] has felt better the last few days, sends love. We hope you both enjoyed your change and feel stronger, long for letters to hear all your news. When you see [D and E] give our love. Later it was utilized by organizations for the hosting of fairs and Police Band concerts. In recent times it has undergone significant changes, notably, the construction of the popular boardwalk extending along its waterfront southward to Accra Beach Hotel and westward as far as the Amaryllis Hotel.
